If you could imagine a Crate and Barrel store turned into offices, you'd be
envisioning our dramatic, new corporate space. Of course, the building had to
be a simple yet sensational design if we were going to put our logo on it. But
the blueprints had to capture a seamless transfer of energies. A continuous
conversation between our stores and our conference rooms. Our offices had to be
infused with the character and pulse of our stores to keep our more than 500
corporate associates in daily touch with our customer. And in return, our
corporate space needed to signal and generate important services and support to
a network of 150 retail stores. And it can't go without saying that it had to
be a visual space that would inspire creative product and thinking.
The result is a pleasure to walk into every morning. Located 25 miles north of
downtown Chicago and surrounded by expanses of green, groves, and blue
skyscraper-less skies, it is a lean horizontal white sculpture in brick, glass,
and steel. 173,000 square feet flooded in natural light. Pine walls, slate
tiles, graphic fabrics, atrium gardens, a suspension staircase. Home to an
amazingly deep roster of in-house operations and departments. Which translates
into many opportunities for career growth and change.
